Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
By 1846, Edgartown had nineteen registered whaling ships and was one of the wealthiest communities per capita in the country. Herman Melville wrote parts of "Moby Dick" while staying downtown at the Colonial Inn. Grand whaling mansions from this period still line the narrow streets of Edgartown.

James Cagney and Patricia Neal (and other famous people) had homes in Edgartown.
